A Critical Need to Protect Threatened Animals Every day, endangered species like elephants, tigers and rhinos are slaughtered to fuel a lucrative trade in products like ivory or horn. Across the seas, shark finning and manta ray exploitation threaten species survival and long-term ocean health. In Asia, the majestic tigers and little-known pangolins are killed and exported on the black market. Within the next decade, or sooner, some of our most precious and important species will pass a critical tipping point or become extinct. Despite widespread public opposition for these practices, powerful special interests continue to lobby Congress as well as legislatures in dozens of states to oppose strengthening laws to protect species headed toward extinction.
Where We Are We have already begun to defeat those who would profit in wildlife trafficking. In 2014, New York and New Jersey passed laws protecting elephants and rhinos, and California followed suit last year. In 2015, Save Animals Facing Extinction helped pass a first-of-its-kind ballot measure in Washington that protected 10 endangered animals – elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, pangolins, marine turtles, sharks, and rays -- with over 70% support. And this year, we supported the passage of a multi-species wildlife bill in Hawaii, the third-largest market for illegal wildlife products in the United States.
Yet despite our successes, opponents continue to block similar attempts in other states. The gun lobby and ivory dealers have killed legislation across the country over the last two years. We need to fight back, and overcome the obstruction by those who wish to profit from the market of wildlife products.
We Need to Save Animals Facing Extinction Established in April 2016, Save Animals Facing Extinction is a 501(c)(4) social welfare, not-for-profit organization funded by grassroots donors. Through our work, we drive change at the state and federal levels by advocating for policies that protect endangered wildlife and end the practices of wildlife trafficking and poaching.
Join Us The race against extinction is urgent and immediate, and our efforts to protect these endangered and exploited species needs your financial support and commitment. Together, we can make a real difference in saving animals facing the threat of extinction.
