KIRO7: I-1401 Aims to Protect Animals, Gun Lobby Comes Out in Opposition

Wednesday, July 1, 2015

KIRO7 reported that the National Rifle Association came out in opposition to Initiative 1401 after supporters announced they had far exceeded the signature requirement to put the measure on the November 2015 ballot:

“On Wednesday, supporters of Initiative 1401 gathered at the Seattle Aquarium to proclaim they have 100,000 more signatures than needed.

Their November ballot measure aims to stop the trading of parts of 10 nearly extinct animals. A similar measure failed in the state legislature.

Supporters say the failed bill had heavy resistance from the National Rifle Association out of concern for firearms that contain ivory pieces.

KIRO 7 contacted the NRA on Wednesday.

‘I don’t think most people realize who Initiative 1401 truly affects. Ivory is found in pianos, guitars, string instruments and wind instruments. Ivory is found in art, in picture frames, in pistol grips and in furniture. Passing this Initiative suddenly turns each and every one of these items into contraband and makes their owners criminals,’ NRA spokesman Lars Dalseide said.

I-1401 has exemptions for bona fide antique pieces that can show historical documentation.  It also has exemptions for scientific and educational uses.”
