SeattlePI.Com: ‘Extinction economy’ products: A rhino’s foot as ashtray, a cheetah’s foot as paperweight

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Joel Connelly of SeattlePI.Com has a great story today on the products that Initiative 1401 would ban if passed on November 3.

“Two tables at the Woodland Park Zoo were filled with products of the “extinction economy;” horns from a rhinoceros and an ashtray made of a rhino foot, along with an elephant tusk, a paperweight using the paw of a cheetah and boots made from the skins of sea turtles. ‘It’s amazing what humans can do,’ said Dr. Fred Koontz, the zoo’s vice president of field conservation, and someone who has been in the field for 30 years, seeking to preserve iconic species.”

Check out his story online and the great photos of the products on display by Genna Martin.
